Biography

Early Life

Jessamine grew up with her parents, Shadowhunters who left The Clave. She was raised to hate the dangerous lives that Shadowhunters lived. When her parents died in a fire when she was fourteen, her living family members, all members of The Clave, refused to take her in, so she was sent to the London Institute to be cared for.

She lived there with Charlotte Branwell and her husband Heny, the heads of the Institute. Throughout her time there, she made the lives of the other occupants exceptionally difficult. She constantly argued with Will Herondale, another ward of the Institute. She was also so haughty she made the maid, Sophie Collins, hate her. Charlotte spent a great deal of time trying to convince Jessamine to be trained as a Shadowhunter though she outright refused. She often longed for her normal family with her parents and anxiously awaited the day she turned eighteen and was eligible to leave the Clave.

The Infernal Devices

Clockwork Angel

Jessamine is introduced as an orphan who lives in the Institute. Theresa Gray dislikes her when they first meet, thinking that she is full of herself, as Jessamine does not even try to hide her negative attitude towards Downworlders, which is what is first thought of Tessa when she arrives.

One of the servants at the Institute, Sophie Collins, complains to Tessa about how much she dislikes Jessamine, saying that she refuses to let her make her dresses and pays for them to be tailor-made herself.

When she and Tessa formally meet, Jessamine expresses doubt in Tessa's identity and powers, which Tessa proves to them by transforming into her. Tessa's opinion of Jessamine does not improve as Jessamine displays that she does not get along with the others in the Institute.

Instructed to investigate for the Clave, Jessamine gets out of the task by using Tessa as an excuse. She takes Tessa out to look for new clothes for her, insisting that her old ones will not fit Tessa. Throughout there shopping spree, Tessa is posed as Jessamine's cousin from America.

Jessamine later reveals to Tessa that she had wanted her alone to ask her to pretend to be her sister so she can finally live away from the Institute once she receives her trust fund money in a few months, when she turns eighteen. Before they can discuss it any further, they realize that they are lost.

When Tessa and Jessamine wander off the path, a goblin attacks them, hoping to let their angel blood spill onto their "strange earth". Jessamine, in a fit of rage, kills the dwarf with her electrum-lined parasol, the weapon Henry made for her. Tessa stops her, and Jessamine becomes upset with herself, realizing that she had just killed the creature.

When the Institute is attacked by Mortmain's Clockwork Army, Jessamine is forced to fight them off. However, she is injured and Sophie and Tessa run to hide without her. She manages to get upstairs and she yells at Tessa for leaving her.

Clockwork Prince

Jessamine appears in the Council meeting, where Charlotte is being interrogated, looking bored. She expresses excitement at the arguments going on near the end, and she leaves with the rest of the members of the London Institute.

Jessamine is next seen sitting with the others, albeit separately, in the dining room trying to find out all that they could about Mortmain's life. She was the one who spoke up and said that what they were doing was a waste of time. Charlotte is unusually sharp with her and tells her that she doesn't even know what she's looking for and that they didn't expect her to help them anyway. She replies that Mortmain's automatons nearly killed her and she wants him punished. Will intervenes by saying that she doesn't care about that, and that she's upset with Nate for tricking her into thinking that he's in love with her when he wasn't. Jessamine rebuffs this, but blushes all the same.

Jessamine is next seen sneaking out of her room dressed as a boy, by Sophie, who unknown to her is going to meet Nate secretly.

Jessamine skips the training with the Lightwoods due to a headache. She is seen sitting in the study with the rest of the Institute's inhabitants while they were talking about heading up to Yorkshire. She complains when Charlotte didn't say her name as one of the people that could go, even though she didn't want to. Her reasoning was that she wanted to know that Charlotte trusted her.

It is later revealed that she had been spying for Nathaniel Gray for months. She walked in on Sophie holding her invitation to a party at the Lightwoods' estate and Sophie knocked her unconscious with a silver mirror.

When she awakens, she is put under questioning by the Mortal Sword, which nearly kills her. She reveals that she married Nate in secret and that Tessa's father was a demon and that her mother was a Shadowhunter.

She is then brought to the Silent City to await trial. She is visited by Jem and Tessa, who hope that she will help them find Nate. At first she refuses, but after some persuasion, she agrees and tells them everything they need to know.

She is last seen in Tessa's dream, when she realizes that Nate has died. She carves her initials, 'JG', into the wall with her wedding ring that Nate gave her but the diamond in the ring breaks. She throws the fake ring across the room in anger because she realizes that Nate didn't love her.

Clockwork Princess

Jessamine returns to the Institute from the Silent City, though the Consul disagreed, she is killed by an automaton. She asks Will to take care of her dolls as a dying wish.

Upon death, Jessamine chose not to pass over and instead return as a ghost. She returned to the Institute, where she had died, and decided to watch over the place and act as its guardian. Unfortunately, she cannot yet enter the Institute, but she is able to progress over time and may apparently sometime get through the doors. She is last seen on the steps of the Institute talking to Will, convincing him to propose marriage to Tessa. She later disappears when she sees Magnus Bane.

Personality

Jessamine is portrayed as being quite full of herself, she doesn't appear to like anyone and she hates the fact that she is Nephilim, although she doesn't consider herself a Shadowhunter. Because she was born into a rich family who disliked Shadowhunters she has always looked down on them. She doesn't like the servants at the Institute making her dresses for her and pays to get them done professionally.

Appearance

Jessamine is a beautiful girl with long blonde hair and brown eyes. Her features are often marred by scowls or her haughty personality which generally made peolple dislike her. She wears beautiful dresses which she buys herself, as opposed to letting Sophie make them for her, and she puts on a great deal of make-up to enhance her beauty.

Paraphernalia

  • Electrum Laced Parasol- Jessamine's parasol is pink with flowered designs on it. Henry gave it to her as a form of protection. The parasol is made out of fabric that is edged with electrum. the tips of it are as razor sharp. It is a deadly weapon and Jessamine used it to kill a goblin in the park and to fight off some clockwork monsters.

Relationships

Theresa Gray

Jessamine doesn't like Tessa at first, however, she soon gets it into her head that because once Tessa isn't allowed in the Institute she'll have nowhere to stay. She proposes that she and Tessa could move out together and be roommates. She is nicer to Tessa after this.

Nathaniel Gray

Jessamine shows an instant liking to Nate and sits by his bedside as he recovers. Once he has woken up, he doesn't seem to realise that she is doting on him as he is used to being treated that way. In the book, Clockwork Prince, it is discovered that she has married Nate and that she was spied for him so he can pass the information to Mortmain or "the Magister."

Will Herondale

Jessamine and Will have a highly antagonistic relationship. They are often found arguing and are the most volatile of the Institute dwellers. Jessamine finds Will's lack of manners atrocious and likewise, Will finds Jessamine to be stuck up and snooty. Nevertheless, Will does care a bit about Jessamine, missing her when she was taken to the Silent City, and Jessamine has similar feelings.  The two of them are a great deal alike.  At one point, Jessamine stated that, out of all the London Institute dwellers, Will was her favorite.

Sophie Collins

Jessamine and Sophie despise one another. Jessamine is often cruel and condescending of Sophie and Sophie finds Jessamine to be haughty and bothersome. Jessamine believes herself superior to Sophie, and the two often share a silent hatred of one another.
